{"id":2217,"date":"2023-07-14T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T04:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webdev.sydney.edu.au\/kolling\/?post_type=news&#038;p=2217"},"modified":"2026-03-13T15:23:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T04:23:22","slug":"australian-researchers-uniquely-positioned-to-support-upcoming-space-missions","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/news\/australian-researchers-uniquely-positioned-to-support-upcoming-space-missions\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian researchers uniquely positioned to support upcoming space missions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The expertise across Australia\u2019s space medicine community was showcased during a special event co-ordinated by the Kolling Institute and the Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staged over two days, the colloquium involved national and international experts including representatives from the Australian Space Agency, the CSIRO, Boeing and the Australian Antarctic Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenters discussed the specific medical, dental, and psychological needs of astronauts, Australian-designed space suits and opportunities for our space community in NASA\u2019s Artemis exploration of the moon and ultimately Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kolling Academic Director Professor Jim Elliott said Australia\u2019s involvement in the Apollo Moon landings is well documented, but perhaps what is not well known is the depth of experience in Australia\u2019s contemporary space industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe have a tremendous depth of medical, technological and research expertise in this field,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralian clinicians and researchers have been collaborating with international space agencies for years.
