{"id":2191,"date":"2023-05-09T14:37:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T04:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webdev.sydney.edu.au\/kolling\/?post_type=news&#038;p=2191"},"modified":"2026-03-13T15:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T04:23:23","slug":"a-simple-yet-smart-approach-to-spinal-cord-injuries-may-offer-a-new-way-forward","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/news\/a-simple-yet-smart-approach-to-spinal-cord-injuries-may-offer-a-new-way-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"A simple yet smart approach to spinal cord injuries may offer a new way forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Researchers based at Royal North Shore Hospital have launched the first study of its kind in the world to support those with a spinal cord injury.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team from the Kolling Institute\u2019s John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research is now seeking recruits for the clinical trial which is investigating the benefits of an approach combining breathing techniques with heart rate feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Study lead Professor Ashley Craig said many of us don\u2019t realise the wide-ranging impact of spinal cord injuries from unstable blood pressure, chronic pain and fatigue through to poor sleep, brain fog, confusion and low mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll these conditions can significantly compromise quality of life,\u201d said Professor Craig, Professor of Rehabilitation Studies at the University of Sydney and the Kolling Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDoctors currently rely on a host of pain management and treatment approaches, but our team has developed an innovative technique to support existing treatment strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt follows increasing evidence around the positive impact of regulated breathing on the nervous system, blood pressure and stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur study is investigating whether rhythmic breathing combined with heart function feedback can help people with a disrupted nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that a disrupted nervous system can be like a car without brakes, with limited moderation of the effects of the nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur approach is using a specific type of breathing to regulate heart function to a point where it influences neural function and the autonomic nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe hope is this will in turn deliver wide ranging benefits for the brain, the gut, the heart, sleep and a host of other physical functions.
