{"id":1759,"date":"2020-12-14T09:11:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-13T22:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webdev.sydney.edu.au\/kolling\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1759"},"modified":"2026-03-12T14:19:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T03:19:02","slug":"new-funding-supports-innovative-approach-to-diagnose-heart-failure","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/news\/new-funding-supports-innovative-approach-to-diagnose-heart-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"New funding supports innovative approach to diagnose heart failure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kolling researcher and Royal North Shore Hospital cardiologist Dr Rebecca Kozor will lead a world-first study using MRI technology to improve the diagnosis of heart failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial has been made possible following a $50,000 Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand-Boehringer Ingelheim innovation grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kozor has welcomed the funding to quantify pulmonary congestion or lung water density in heart failure patients during exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHeart failure with preserved ejection fraction is a significant health burden in Australia and worldwide, but it\u2019s also notoriously challenging to diagnose,\u201d Dr Kozor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCardiac MRI technology offers a non-invasive way to quantify pulmonary congestion and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure through imaging of water density in the lung tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur trial will be a global first, with patients to operate a reclined bicycle inside the MRI machine to elevate heart rates prior to the MRI scanning of the heart and lung tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a real potential to improve the diagnosis of heart failure by measuring lung water density, and identify cases where cardiac dysfunction only presents during exertion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kozor said that validating this new MRI technique during exercise could provide a valuable way for researchers to accurately and non-invasively study the effects of new interventions and heart failure treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand President Professor Clara Chow congratulated Dr Kozor on the insight and imagination shown in her grant submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHalf of all people diagnosed with heart failure die within five years, so research funding is critical to encouraging our best minds to find breakthroughs that benefit patients,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1760,"menu_order":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_uag_custom_page_level_css":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"research-group-tax":[],"primary-research-area":[],"class_list":["post-1759","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-newsletters"],"acf":[],"uagb_featured_image_src":{"full":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop.webp",550,380,false],"thumbnail":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop-150x150.webp",150,150,true],"medium":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop-300x207.webp",300,207,true],"medium_large":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop.webp",550,380,false],"large":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop.webp",550,380,false],"1536x1536":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop.webp",550,380,false],"2048x2048":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/thumb_Blog_Kozor-cropped_w550_h380_fcrop.webp",550,380,false]},"uagb_author_info":{"display_name":"ict-wordpress-support@sydney.edu.au","author_link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/author\/ict-wordpress-supportsydney-edu-au\/"},"uagb_comment_info":0,"uagb_excerpt":"Kolling researcher and Royal North Shore Hospital cardiologist Dr Rebecca Kozor will lead a world-first study using MRI technology to improve the diagnosis of heart failure.
