{"id":1754,"date":"2020-12-10T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T22:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webdev.sydney.edu.au\/kolling\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1754"},"modified":"2025-08-31T09:23:55","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T23:23:55","slug":"cancer-expertise-recognised","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/news\/cancer-expertise-recognised\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer expertise recognised"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Kolling\u2019s Dr Amanda Hudson will lead an exciting pilot study after being awarded an innovation grant by the Mark Hughes Foundation for brain cancer research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bill Walsh Lab scientist is one of a select group to have received funding from the foundation. Her research will now investigate the early detection of disease progression in brain cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Hudson said identifying changes in tumour growth early is the key to maintaining the wellbeing of cancer patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur project aims to improve the monitoring of patients with brain cancer, so that we can identify if a tumour has begun to grow, even before any symptoms develop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis would allow ineffective treatments to be stopped, and other treatments that may be able to control the tumour to begin as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently brain tumours are monitored with imaging or through surgery, but these techniques have limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project will use simple blood tests to find factors or protein biomarkers in the blood that change as tumours change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBlood samples will be taken at routine clinical check-ups so that patients don\u2019t need to come to the clinic more than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will allow us to follow these factors along each patient\u2019s journey with brain cancer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll be able to see how the factors change with treatment and over time, and we may be able to predict if the tumour will respond to the treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already identified some protein biomarkers in the tumours that change as the tumours starts to grow.
