{"id":1689,"date":"2020-08-27T14:41:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T04:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webdev.sydney.edu.au\/kolling\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1689"},"modified":"2025-08-30T14:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T04:42:09","slug":"researchers-assess-new-approach-to-post-operative-care","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/news\/researchers-assess-new-approach-to-post-operative-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers assess new approach to post-operative care"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With increasing evidence around the benefits of physiotherapy after surgery, a project is set to get underway examining new ways to extend the support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BOOST project will investigate how hospitals can deliver more frequent exercise programs for patients with hip fracture, through an innovative model of care involving physiotherapists and other healthcare workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program will be led by the University of Sydney\u2019s Associate Professor Alison Harmer and Clinical Lecturer and physiotherapist Marie March, and will be trialled in the Northern Sydney and Western Sydney local health districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sydney Health Partners has provided the initial $25,000 for the trial, which will involve the team from Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital\u2019s physiotherapy department and orthogeriatric service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Sydney Local Health District Professor Jim Elliott has welcomed the chance to be involved in the project, which he hopes may extend post-operative care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe know there are wide ranging benefits of more intensive physiotherapy after surgery, from improved patient mobility to shorter hospital stays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe lack of availability of physiotherapists in many hospitals means this can\u2019t always be delivered adequately and in a timely fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team will be looking at how the existing non-physiotherapy workforce can be trained to deliver high-quality post-operative exercise for patients with hip fracture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach will be evaluated using a variety of methods, including patient outcomes, cost and patient-reported experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe are looking forward to the collaborative project and hope it will help inform future models of care, improving patient outcomes and recovery after some surgeries,\u201d Jim said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_uag_custom_page_level_css":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"research-group-tax":[],"primary-research-area":[],"class_list":["post-1689","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry","category-newsletters"],"acf":[],"uagb_featured_image_src":{"full":false,"thumbnail":false,"medium":false,"medium_large":false,"large":false,"1536x1536":false,"2048x2048":false},"uagb_author_info":{"display_name":"ict-wordpress-support@sydney.edu.au","author_link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/staging\/author\/ict-wordpress-supportsydney-edu-au\/"},"uagb_comment_info":0,"uagb_excerpt":"With increasing evidence around the benefits of physiotherapy after surgery, a project is set to get underway examining new ways to extend the support.
