{"id":1535,"date":"2019-10-30T06:32:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T19:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webdev.sydney.edu.au\/kolling\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1535"},"modified":"2025-08-30T06:33:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T20:33:16","slug":"world-first-discovery","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/news\/world-first-discovery\/","title":{"rendered":"World-first discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kolling Institute scientist Dr Yo Otsu and a team of researchers have discovered a unique receptor in the brain which can regulate negative moods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finding is the culmination of eight years of painstaking investigation, involving Dr Otsu and researchers from France, Canada and Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research has been published in the top academic journal Science, highlighting the discovery of the excitatory glycine receptor in a little known region of the adult brain, the medial habenula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Otsu, who is the first author on the paper, said he and his colleagues now believe the receptor plays a role in regulating negative moods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe function of the medial habenula is not very well understood, but it is thought to play a role in depression, stress, anxiety and nicotine addiction,\u201d said Dr. Otsu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTherefore, the discovery of this rare type of receptor and its role in modulating anxiety means it has the potential to be a highly specific target for mood regulating drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExisting medications to treat conditions like anxiety and depression have side effects because they affect the whole brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe discovery of this receptor offers the potential to create much more targeted medicines with fewer side-effects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Karin Aubrey from the Pain Management Research Institute\u2019s Neurobiology of Pain Lab, where Dr. Otsu now works, said the finding opens up a whole new area of brain research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe will begin new research within the Kolling Institute to further understand the role of this receptor, with the ultimate goal of developing medications to target it,\u201d Dr Aubrey said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1536,"menu_order":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_uag_custom_page_level_css":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"research-group-tax":[],"primary-research-area":[],"class_list":["post-1535","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research-excellence"],"acf":[],"uagb_featured_image_src":{"full":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery.jpg",1000,710,false],"thumbnail":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery-150x150.jpg",150,150,true],"medium":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery-300x213.jpg",300,213,true],"medium_large":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery-768x545.jpg",768,545,true],"large":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery.jpg",1000,710,false],"1536x1536":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery.jpg",1000,710,false],"2048x2048":["https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/root_Blog_World-first-discovery.jpg",1000,710,false]},"uagb_author_info":{"display_name":"ict-wordpress-support@sydney.edu.au","author_link":"https:\/\/kollinginstitute.org.au\/news_demo\/author\/ict-wordpress-supportsydney-edu-au\/"},"uagb_comment_info":0,"uagb_excerpt":"Kolling Institute scientist Dr Yo Otsu and a team of researchers have discovered a unique receptor in the brain which can regulate negative moods.
